Course Content
Design of irrigation systems: border, furrow, basin, sprinkler, trickle. Trick/drip.
Basic water management concepts; Irrigation scheduling: principles and objectives; deficit irrigation scheduling methods: ET-deficit irrigation, Stress Day Index (SDI), Crop Critical Growth Stage (CCGS). Crop Yield-Water Use modelling techniques: concepts, formulations and evaluation.
Quality of irrigation water. Reclamation of saline and alkali soils. Feasibility studies.
Irrigation systems evaluation: principles and objective; key parameters affecting irrigation efficiencies. Measuring devices and methods used in evaluation and interpretation.
Field Trip and Technical Report of the Trip
The class must undertake a field trip on a study tour to one or two selected irrigation projects. Students are expected to thoroughly study the projects concerning historical background, project performance (irrigation water management- conveyance, allocation, distribution and application, Cropping intensity, irrigation operation and maintenance, participation of water users’ association, marketing issues etc), challenges – infrastructure, technical, environmental, etc and way forward.
